Sir Stephen Timms - MP and Social Security Minister

Sir Stephen Timms is a British Politician and Member of Parliament for East Ham in London. He currently serves as Minister of State for Social Security and Disability.

He served as Leader of Newham Council from 1990 to 1994 and has been the Labour MP for East Ham continuously since June 1994. He held twelve ministerial roles between 1998 and 2010, including Financial Secretary to the Treasury across three separate periods — 1999–2001, 2004–2005, and 2008–2010 — and Chief Secretary to the Treasury from 2006 to 2007, attending Cabinet in that role. He also served as Minister of State for Schools. In opposition, he served as Shadow Minister for Employment and later Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions.

From 2020 to 2024 he chaired the UK Work and Pensions Select Committee. He was appointed a Knight in the late Queen's Birthday Honours in 2022.
